Ambassador for a Day-Women's Rights Champion Forever!

In the purpose of championing women's rights and promoting gender equality, the British embassy in Lebanon launched a nationwide competition for high school girls. Following the 2023 theme "Embrace Equity", the participants were asked to submit their response (short article or video) to the following key question: If you were an ambassador for a day, what would you do to make the world a more equitable place? Out of the 500 participants, twelve winners, two of whom from SSCC Ain Najm, were selected to spend a day with an ambassador. Indeed, our grade 11 students, Maurine Merhi and Sasha Sfeily, were assigned to spend a normal day at the American and Mexican embassies respectively. Thus, they had the opportunity to visit every department, attend meetings, and participate in women's day debates and activities.

Maurine Merhi:
Ma mission en tant qu'ambassadrice des États-Unis au Liban pour un jour, j’ai un programme lourd et chargé. Le lundi 6 mars 2023, j’ai été conviée à l'ambassade des États-Unis au Liban. J'ai été accueillie à 8h30 par l'ambassadrice Mme Dorothy Shea.
Nous avons d'abord participé à une table ronde, avec des personnes haut placées de l'ambassade, où nous avons débattu autour du programme de la semaine en cours. Par la suite, j’ai eu l'occasion de visiter les différents départements de l'ambassade à savoir : la section des visas, celle des finances, celle de la communication ainsi que celle des ressources humaines.J'ai également animé une conférence de presse en présence de nombreux journalistes, et j'ai pris plaisir à leur répondre en tant que jeune ambassadrice de 16 ans.
Notre journée a été égayée par un cours de Pilates dont le coach n'était autre que Madame l'ambassadrice elle-même. J’ai pu visiter la section des "Marines", où j’ai été honorée par une médaille qui décore habituellement les personnes haut placées.
Pour couronner le tout, j'ai été invitée à la maison de l'ambassadrice, pour un déjeuner raffiné dans un cadre élégant . Au terme de cette longue journée, j’ai participé à une table ronde autour du sujet des femmes travaillant dans des domaines réservés aux hommes. Là, j'ai eu l'occasion d'animer moi-même une partie de la conversation. C'était un échange remarquable et stimulant.
Ce fut une journée inspirante et enrichissante , voire indélébile et qui me marquera à jamais . Je remercie énormément mon établissement scolaire qui m'a donné l’opportunité d’y participer et de passer une journée mémorable, sans pareille.

Sasha Sfeily:
I was honored to spend an entire day at the Mexican Embassy, meeting the Ambassador’s team and learning about every aspect of the different sectors that I honestly didn’t know existed. On this day, I shared lunch with them and attended one of their professional meetings. I also took part in the fun activities that they organized on the occasion of Women’s day. In addition, I was extremely pleased to be a guest at the award ceremony that took place at the British Ambassador’s residence. There I met my fellow eleven ambassadors for a day.
Thank you for this opportunity that aims at giving a voice to young girls in Lebanon, and that is undoubtedly moving us towards improving young girls’ leadership and creativity skills.
